Why are Australians so laid back and always joking around

We love to joke around because it’s how we get through the day.

Every time I see my dad, he’s got a new joke or saying for me.

It’s a part of our upbringing and culture.

It’s easy to joke when you live in a country where the bark doesn’t stay on the trees, you throw a stick called a Boomerang and it comes back to hit you, and kookaburras laugh at you when you get out of bed, and when you get home from work in the evening!

Add to this strangeness the colonial tough- mindedness:

making the best of a bad lot in life by using irony, or self-deprecation, and mocking oneself and others, or the situation.

Interpreting Our Major Chakras
Why are Australians always joking around

Daily life for a convict was very harsh, with forced labour and chain gangs, and even free settlers battled, but for different reasons, such as trying to grow crops under conditions and weather that was totally different to anything they had known in England and Ireland.

It’s more than likely that these conditions also fostered our egalitarianism (since everyone had to pull together to survive) and our reputation for honesty and openness.

We now enjoy an enviable standard of living, and live on one of the most diverse and beautiful islands in the world with miles of pristine beaches, high quality food (we scored within the highest bracket in Oxfam’s Global Food Index for most readily available, nutritious food) , lots of scenic waterfalls (yes, even in the deserts) and the kangaroo population outnumbers the people.

There’s already some great answers here.

I will only add, in a more modern context, that Australia doesn’t care about ruling the world, we just care about our standard of living, so we don’t feel the need to chest pump about our achievements, and instead, take the attitude that our successes will speak for themselves.

If you’re good at what you do, why do you have to brag about it? Or make a fuss?

When a country does not seek world domination, the rest of the BS that goes on in the rest of the world, with countries jostling for power and sending their navy boats into neighbouring seas to send a message about ‘dominance and power’ just seems so ridiculous.

So we just shrug, say ‘she’ll be right mate’, and get on with living our lives.

All the while, shaking our heads at how so many countries don’t seem to understand how easy it is to be happy and enjoy your life, and how useless the search for dominance and control really is.

Australians understand this, and when you don’t care about dominating the world, you can just get on with creating a great country and enjoying your life.

Believe you me, if Australia could send a message to the rest of the world, it would be something like this, “sit down, shut up and have a beer…feel better?”.
