Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday called for the removal of statues of Confederate soldiers and officials from the US Capitol , as talks about the country’s treatment of ethnic minorities once again raised questions about the history of antiquities.
In an open letter to the Library’s Joint Committee, Pelosi asked Congress to “lead by example” and remove 11 Confederate statues from the Capitol.
“The statues in the Capitol must exemplify our ideals as Americans, expressing who we are and who we aspire to be as a nation. The effects advocated by men who have defended the cruelty and barbarity of achieving such an outright racist end are a hideous insult to these ideals and Pelosi wrote in the letter to Committee Chairman Roy Blunt and Vice President Zoe Lovfren, “Their statues respect hatred, not heritage. It must be removed. ”
The Confederate States of America, its army, and its flag remain controversial in the United States. The uprising waged by the Confederacy in defense of the property of the slave led to the deaths of more than 618,000, and many see the continued reverence of its symbols as a painful reminder of the start of racism in the country.

نانسي بيلوسي تدعو إلى إزالة تماثيل “الكراهية”
دعت رئيسة مجلس النواب الأمريكي نانسي بيلوسي أمس الأربعاء إلى إزالة 11 تمثالاً لعسكريين ومسؤولين من الحقبة الكونفدرالية، وذلك في إطار الجهود المبذولة لمكافحة العنصرية على خلفية قضية جورج فلويد، الأمريكي الأسود الذي قضى خلال توقيفه على يد شرطي أبيض.
وجاء في رسالة وجّهتها بيلوسي، زعيمة الديمقراطيين في الكونغرس، أن “تماثيل الرجال الذي نادوا بالوحشية والهمجية للوصول إلى هذه النهاية العنصرية الصريحة، تشكّل إهانة بشعة لمُثُل” الديمقراطية والحرية.
وتابعت أن “تماثيلهم تكرّم الكراهية وليس التراث”، مضيفة “يجب إزالتها”.
