FDHRD: The First Organization in the Arab World and North Africa to be a Member of the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW)
The Forum for Development and Human Rights Dialogue (FDHRD) announces today, the 18th of October, its membership in the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW).
GAATW works to increase public’s awareness and advocate for legislations to combat human trafficking in general and trafficking in women in particular.
GAATW promotes and defends the human rights of all migrants and their families against the threat of an increasingly globalized labor market and calls for safety standards for migrant workers in the process of migration and in the formal and informal work sectors, such as garment and food processing, agriculture and farming, domestic work, sex work – where slavery-like conditions and practices exist.
The GAATW International Secretariat is based in Bangkok, Thailand. The alliance is formed of more than 80 non-governmental organizations from Africa, Asia, Europe, LAC and North America.
Member Organizations include migrant rights organizations; anti-trafficking organizations; self-organized groups of migrant workers, domestic workers, survivors of trafficking and sex workers; human rights and women’s rights organizations; and direct service providers.
FDHRD is one of the civil society organizations specialized in combating human trafficking and is the first organization in the Arab world and North Africa to join GAATW. FDHRD seeks to eliminate all forms of human trafficking in Egypt through monitoring human trafficking, organizing seminars and workshops across Egyptian governorates, in order to raise people’s awareness on the phenomenon and its threats and publishing reports on human rights violations resulting from human trafficking.
It is worth noting that GAATW is committed to make effective change at the local and regional level through its members and allies, and internationally through the work of the International Secretariat and GAATW’s special consultative status to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.
